Welcome to the website of TISLID'10, to be held at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Madrid, 21-22 October 2010.

Over the last decade, research on language teaching/learning has led to an outstanding proliferation of technological applications. Many of these are oriented towards restricted professional and academic contexts of use as a reflection of real world demands for language tuition. The multiple divergences of such specialized linguistic domains with respect to general or standard languages require a dedicated perspective for the computer-based teaching and processing of what are also referred to as LSPs (Languages for Special Purposes).

Hence, the ATLAS research group (http://atlas.uned.es), which has been working for over a decade in the field of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), is happy to host a research event which offers an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences and promote face-to-face academic debate on effective and innovative ways to design and develop CALL systems grounded in linguistic, pedagogic and technological principles.

ATLAS is currently investigating the way in which face-to-face English language classes can be optimally complemented by innovative ICALL software based upon the Systemic Functional Linguistics approach, integrated with the notional-functional syllabus model in the CEFR and a cognitive and social constructivist pedagogic framework, which enables a combination of individual and collaborative learning. In previous projects undertaken by the research group, all the software has been developed by the team, including the online learning environment; now, the e-Learning platform LAMS is being used (due to the many advantages it offers for this purpose), together with an intelligent diagnostic mechanism developed by the group.
